Origins

Toto's early history, which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demands of new, modern urban housing. To accomplish this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding overseas to take advantage of sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.

In the 1990s Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company used the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction of customers.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than typical models.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings - but it's actually a fairly simple rock group. The band started out as a quartet and recorded two albums: 1979's self titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its share of issues. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to deliver an album that was a success or they would drop them. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their previous experience, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album starts out hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. But the album also contains some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and should sound totally wrong, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to help promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition that limited his singing abilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
